When Is Dental Sedation used?

Sedation dentistry takes the edge off dental visits, and vastly reduces the risk of injury. It is helpful for toddlers and young children who are often unable to keep still long enough to allow Dr. Karen to perform high-precision procedures safely. It also allows children needing extensive dental treatments or those with high anxiety levels to relax, cope, and feel positive about treatment. Sedation is particularly useful for kids with special needs, preventing spontaneous movement, guiding cooperative behavior, and allowing for safe and stress-free dental care

What Are the Most Common Types of Dental Sedation?

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Otherwise known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the most common form of sedation dentistry used in dental procedures. Your child will breathe the gas in through a mask and will remain awake and responsive to directions during treatment. The laughing gas will reduce your child's anxiety and any sensation of pain, making it easier to sit still. This mild sedation is very safe and highly effective in helping even the most fearful kids relax.

Oral Sedation

Children with high levels of anxiety or those undergoing complex or lengthy dental procedures may require oral sedation. Your child will become relaxed and may even drift off into a light sleep, but can be easily awakened.  The sedation regimens and doses and calculated depending on the patient’s age and weight. Oral sedation is recommended for patients that have no underlying medical conditions.

This technique uses medications for your child’s safety and comfort during dental treatment. Sedation can help increase cooperation and reduce anxiety and/or discomfort associated with dental procedures. In particular, it can prevent injury by helping a child stay still around the sharp or fast-moving instruments needed for treatment. For this technique, the pediatric dentist selects a medication and dose based upon your child’s overall health, level of anxiety and dental treatment recommendations. It is not intended to cause a loss of consciousness. (In other words, the child is relaxed but not asleep. She is able to respond to touch or voices.)

IV Sedation - General Anesthesia

Depending on your child's needs, general anesthesia may be required to complete lengthy treatment plans. Your child will wake up with no memory of the procedure. Dr. Karen will help you determine if general anesthesia is right for your child.
