Oral Health Risk Assessment

During your child’s first visits until they turn 3 years of age, Dr. Karen will evaluate the teeth that are coming in and their mouth.  A quick exam and gentle cleaning and discuss how to care of your child’s teeth.  Helpful tips and recommendations will be given: cleaning their gums with a wet wash cloth after their feedings and once their teeth are coming in brush their teeth with a wet tooth brush only. We recommend not letting your baby sleep with their bottle unless it is filled with water. Other types of drinks can lead to “baby bottle tooth decay”.

TEETHING

Helpful tips while teething are: Clean their gums with a finger brush that can help ease any discomfort also giving them a cold plastic teething toy is a great tool to keep them happy while teething.

SILVER DIAMINE FLUORIDE

Some children may develop caries at a very early age, SDF is a liquid that can be painlessly brushed on a cavity on a child's tooth to stop decay. This medication may be an option to consider SDF for cavities if your child is too young to be sedated or to have any treatment completed, as SDF can help delay more extensive procedures such as drilling to fill a cavity or sedation until a child is older.

NON-NUTRITIVE HABITS

As a mom, Dr. Karen knows that whatever can ease our kids into being happy and calm is a good thing specially during hectic days, however when habits like thumb sucking, finger sucking stick around after teeth come in and passed the 3rd birthday can cause many issues for a child’s oral development, such as difficulty breathing, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, crowding etc
